Openmediavault gets frequent updates at the moment caused by the heavy development and bugfixes. To keep your NAS in a healthy state you should know about the two methods of updating your OMV.

There are two kinds of updates, which are:

  1. Updates within a release level, e.g. 0.4.0.1 -> 0.4.0.2
  2. Updates from one release to the next one, e.g. Omnius (0.3.x) -> Fedaykin (0.4.x)

Upates within the release level will be done via the Update Manager.

Minor Updates

Open the OpenMediaVault WebGUI. Updates are listed in the section System > Update Manager. A cron job automatically checks for new updates once a day.

Check:

Click the Check button to initiate the system to look for available new updates.

Upload:

This function provides the functionality to manual upload an update file. In case of broken internet connection you can upload an update file.

You can download update files here: http://packages.openmediavault.org/public/pool/main/o/openmediavault/.

The following procedure is required to run the manual upload process:

  1. Download update file from upper URL.
  2. Select menu item System > Update Manager.
  3. Click Upload button and select the update file you downloaded before.
  4. Click OK button to upload the update to OMV.

Install:

To install one or more listed updates simply check them. Then press the Install button.

Major Updates

Major Updates need another form of update procedure, as it will change parts of the WebGUI and other vital parts of OMV. To run those types of updates you need to login on the command line with root user, either using ssh or local console.

The folowing sections will outline who to run a update for each version

Omnius (0.3.x) -> Fedaykin (0.4.x)

Since 0.3.7.1 you can simply use the 'omv-release-upgrade' CLI command to upgrade your system. The method shown below is obsolete and only neccessary if you're on a version lower than 0.3.7.1.

Login to your OMV with root. Then edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/openmediavault.list with your favorite editor (vi for me) and change the first line, so that it looks like this:

deb http://packages.openmediavault.org/public fedaykin main

Save the file and then run the following commands:

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
reboot

Fedaykin (0.4.x) -> Sardaukar (0.5.x)

You can use the

omv-release-upgrade

CLI command to upgrade your system when you're on 0.4.36 and higher.

Sardaukar (0.5.x) -> Kralizec (1.x)

You can use the

omv-release-upgrade

CLI command to upgrade your system.

Kralizec (1.x) -> Stoneburner(2.x)

You can use the

omv-release-upgrade

CLI command to upgrade your system.

Stoneburner (2.x) -> Erasmus (3.x)

You can use the

omv-release-upgrade

CLI command to upgrade your system.
